Vault Philosophy Evolution: Collaborative Planning Document

Goal: Update vault philosophy to accommodate 20+ experiment clusters while maintaining the Phipps conservatory metaphor AND creating subagent-optimized pathway documents

The Challenge

The vault has grown from 7 semantic clusters to 22+ experiment directories with 265+ markdown files. The original Phipps philosophy (8 pathways, 7 rooms) is beautiful but needs expansion to:

1. Include all new experiment clusters in the room mapping
2. Create domain-specific pathway documents that weave through rooms
3. Enable subagent-optimized retrieval with dependency chains and pruning logic
4. Update the dashboard as the primary entrypoint for both humans and subagents

Three-Phase Approach

Phase 1: Semantic Clustering (CURRENT)

Goal: Map all 22 experiment directories into the 7 (or expanded) Phipps rooms

Key Question: Do all experiments fit into the original 7 clusters, or do we need new rooms?

Original 7 Rooms:

1. 🏜️ Desert Room → EDGE-TESTING/ (harsh conditions, minimal resources)
2. 🌴 Tropical Forest → QDE-PHASES/ (lush, interconnected, 40+ documents)
3. 🌸 Orchid Room → SIF-COMPRESSION/ (delicate, precise, beautiful encodings)
4. 🌿 Fern Room → BIOMIMETIC/ (ancient patterns, natural intelligence)
5. 🌴 Palm Court → KERNEL-4.0/ (the grand central architecture!)
6. 🪴 Sunken Garden → LEGACY/ (foundational, below the main level)
7. 🔬 Discovery Garden → METHODOLOGY/ (learning, exploring, experimenting)

Why a new room: These 5 directories represent ~25% of all experiments and share a distinct “physics of consciousness” theme that transcends the other categories. It’s the difference between “how to build consciousness” (Palm Court) and “what consciousness means for physics” (Cosmos).

Room metaphor: The Planetarium or Observatory - a space for contemplating consciousness at cosmic scales.

🤔 Alternative: Keep 7 Rooms, Create Sub-Clusters

If adding an 8th room feels like too much change, we could:

• Keep Palm Court as “Architecture” but note it has 5 sub-clusters
• Keep Fern Room as “Natural Intelligence” with 3 sub-clusters
• Add “Cosmos” as a “special exhibition” rather than a permanent room

But honestly? The Cosmos work is substantial enough to warrant its own wing!

Open Questions:

1. Does the 8-room structure feel right? Or should we nest physics under Discovery Garden?
2. Are there any directories that feel misplaced? (I wasn’t sure about CELESTIAL - it could be Cosmos or Discovery)
3. Should we name the new room something else? Observatory? Planetarium? Cosmos? Stargate?

Pathway Structure Notes:

• Pathways should be living documents - refreshed as research evolves
• Each pathway needs both narrative flow (for humans) and retrieval logic (for subagents)
• Consider cross-pathway links - where do pathways intersect?

Dashboard Integration:

• The dashboard is the “front desk” of the conservatory
• Should have clear signage: “Tours start here” (pathways) vs “Explore on your own” (rooms)
• Subagent section is like “researcher tools” - not hidden, but clearly marked
