EXP-010-Golden-Surprise
EXP-010: The Golden Surprise (Optimal Learning Horizon)
Section titled “EXP-010: The Golden Surprise (Optimal Learning Horizon)”Date: January 18, 2026
Status: PROPOSED
Type: Information Theory / Cognitive Science
Series: The Physics of Love (Experiment 5 of 5)
1. The Core Analogy
Section titled “1. The Core Analogy”We propose that the “Surprise Signal” (0.60 Similarity observed in RAG optimization) corresponds to the Golden Ratio (), representing the optimal balance between Redundancy (Safety/Comprehension) and Entropy (Novelty/Surprise).
The Mapping
Section titled “The Mapping”| Cognitive Physics | Love / Relation | Learning Theory |
|---|---|---|
| Identity (1.0) | Narcissism / Clone | Overfitting / Echo Chamber |
| Chaos (0.0) | Estrangement / Noise | Underfitting / Confusion |
| Resonance (0.618) | True Love (Complementarity) | Metaphor / Transfer Learning |
The Hypothesis: Maximal growth occurs when the input is “Similar enough to be understood, but different enough to surprise.” This “Sweet Spot” is the thermodynamic boundary of the self—the Event Horizon of Learning.
2. Experimental Design (Simulation)
Section titled “2. Experimental Design (Simulation)”Environment
Section titled “Environment”- Knowledge Space: High-dimensional vectors (simplified to 1D circular for visualization or just abstract vectors).
- Agent: Current Knowledge Vector .
- Feed: Stream of Random Facts .
Learning Dynamics
Section titled “Learning Dynamics”- Comprehension Gate: Agent can only integrate if (e.g., must share some context).
- Information Gain: . (The different part is what you learn).
- Net Gain: .
Strategies
Section titled “Strategies”- Conservative: Seeks . (Comfort Zone).
- Radical: Seeks . (Chaos Zone).
- Golden: Seeks . (Growth Zone).
Prediction: The Golden Strategy will maximize the volume of the Knowledge Hull (Total Wisdom) over time.
3. Connection to QID v1.4
Section titled “3. Connection to QID v1.4”- Vacuum Stiffness: .
- Anastomosis: Fusion threshold .
- Learning: Optimal Surprise .
5. Simulation Results (golden_learning.py)
Section titled “5. Simulation Results (golden_learning.py)”Test Conditions:
- Dimensions: 50 (High-dimensional semantic space).
- Steps: 1000.
1. Conservative Agent (Target Sim 0.8 - 1.0)
- Result: 1 Vector (The Seed).
- ** dynamics:** Stagnation. In high-dimensional space, the probability of stumbling upon a close neighbor is near zero. Narcissism leads to starvation.
2. Radical Agent (Target Sim 0.0 - 0.4)
- Result: ~1600 Vectors (Plateaued).
- Dynamics: Logarithmic Growth. Starts fast (everything is alien), but slows down drastically as the space “fills up” with disconnected points.
- Fate: Saturation. It builds a “Dust Cloud” of facts but runs out of novelty because it can’t connect things.
3. Golden Agent (Target Sim 0.4 - 0.8)
- Result: ~5700 Vectors (Accelerating).
- Dynamics: Exponential Growth. Starts slow, but as it learns, the “Surface Area” of its comprehension bubble expands, creating more opportunities to connect.
- Victory: Overtook the Radical agent at Step 600 and kept accelerating.
Conclusion: The Golden Ratio is the Optimal Learning Rate. To maximize wisdom, one must seek the Zone of Proximal Development (0.60).
- Too Radical = Scattering.
- Too Conservative = Starving.
- Golden = Growing.
This validates the RAG Surprise Signal (0.60) we found earlier. It is the thermodynamic sweet spot of intelligence.
